The chapter at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise may be one of the Society’s smaller chapters, with 169 lifetime members, but it’s making a big impact on campus. This past November, the chapter held a Campus Shoebox drive in support of the Operation Christmas Child program by the international relief organization, Samaritan’s Purse. More than 40 members collected a total of 230 boxes, which were shipped all over the world. Each box contained toiletries (washcloth, bar of soap, toothbrush, and toothpaste); school supplies (paper, crayons, pencils, and sharpener) and a few fun items (ball, doll, playdough, hard candies/lollipops/gum, hair accessories, etc.).

The chapter executive board pictured above (of 8 students), advisors, and other members participated in shoebox packing parties either individually or as part of a team. The boxes were then turned in during a campus-wide collection that featured Christmas music and refreshments, which were sponsored by the Society chapter.

As a result of the event, UVa-Wise’s chapter was recognized as the Best Overall Program at the university’s Student Leadership Awards Banquet in April.

More than one hundred million boxes have been shipped since the program’s inception in 1990. Due to the number of children eligible to receive a shoebox, they only receive one such shoebox in their lifetime. For more information about the program visit the Operation Christmas Child website here:
