   New leadership society at DSLCC inducts charter members

A newly formed leadership organization at Dabney S. Lancaster Community College held its first induction ceremony May 9 on the DSLCC Clifton Forge campus for 13 chapter members. The Sigma Alpha Pi Chapter of the National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS) has been active at DSLCC for about a year, with DSLCC College Success Coach Christopher Shiraki and DSLCC Adult Career Coach Samantha Gray as advisors.

Sixty-seven students were welcomed into one of the fastest growing student organizations on campus May 9, during the Spring 2017 Induction Ceremony for the National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS) at Brookdale. The inductees – who spent a combined 816 hours this semester participating in intensive workshops, leadership training sessions and interactive seminars – were presented with official NSLS pins and certificates of recognition in front a capacity crowd of friends, family, classmates, and college officials in the Student Life Center. “I am so proud to be here with you and celebrate your achievement tonight,” said Brookdale president Maureen Murphy. “The organization that you are joining is truly, truly a jewel here at Brookdale Community College, and you are going to grow immensely as members of the National Society of Leadership and Success. I congratulate you all.”

PCC’s Sigma Alpha Pi chapter of the National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS) welcomed 26 new members to its ranks for completing the required elements of induction and community service. Five more students – Margaret Knight, Morgan Padgett, Danisha Rogers, Haley Stephenson and Grace Wise – will be inducted with National Engaged Leader Award honors.

The Ivy Tech Community College Columbus chapter of the National Society of Leadership and Success recently inducted 27 new members, including several from Jackson County. The induction of the new members brings the society’s total inducted membership to 150.

   Mussab Ali Becomes RU-N’s First Truman Scholar

Rutgers University – Newark Society Chapter Founder/President, Mussab Ali is only a junior and already making his mark on the world. As Rutgers University – Newark’s first Truman Scholar and the 10th from Rutgers University overall, he is one of just 62 nationally, chosen from a field of over 768 candidates nominated by 315 colleges and universities this year based on their leadership potential, academic and communications skills, and dedication to public service. It’s not the first time, though, that he has been a standout. "Mussab Ali is a standard bearer, a student leader who has so demonstrably put his mark on our university,” says Rutgers-Newark Chancellor Nancy Cantor. “From starting and directing a campus chapter of the National Society of Leadership and Success, to serving on the Executive Board of the Muslim Student Association, he had been a positive community builder--a leader of future leaders among our incredibly diverse student body, listening acutely, drawing out perspectives from others, and shaping those around him. We couldn't be more proud of him.”

   Mercer Debaters Finish Top Two in State for Third Consecutive Year

For the third consecutive year, Mercer University’s debate team has the top two speakers in the Georgia Parliamentary Debate Association (GPDA). Mercer University - Macon Society Chapter President, Kyle Bligen was awarded first-place speaker at this past weekend’s GPDA state competition in Valdosta, while fellow junior Jaz Buckley finished second. Mercer is the first institution to hold the top two individual speaker awards at the state level for three straight years.
