On October 17, Sir Richard Branson visited John Jay College to speak about the role of social good in business as part of a live national broadcast organized by The National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS). “Your idea must make a positive impact in people’s lives,” Branson said in front of an audience that included students, staff, faculty, and President Karol V. Mason. “Otherwise what's the point?”

Marshall University's Chapter of The National Society of Leadership and Success will sponsor the streaming of a live broadcast featuring Sir Richard Branson, a humanitarian, activist, adventurer and business icon. The event will take place beginning at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 17, in room BE-5 of the Memorial Student Center. The event, hosted by the Society chapter at John Jay College in New York City, will allow Branson to answer questions by viewers via Twitter. This is the second installment of the Society's 2017-2018 Speaker Broadcast Series, which reaches more than 580 college campuses each month during the academic year.

Genevieve Thiers will be featured in a video broadcast at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 10 in the Frances B. Ross Ballroom A of the Panola College Student Center. “All students, faculty and staff are encouraged to attend,” said Corey Johnson, Environmental and Biology Professor, and NSLS faculty advisor. “Genevieve will discuss how she combined her voice with her business savvy to thrive. This broadcast should be especially helpful to fine arts students who are interested in capitalizing on their trade. Business students looking to go into talent management should also gain insight from this presentation.”

Ralph Nader once said: “The function of leadership is to produce more leaders, not more followers.” The problem is, this is easier said than done. Effective leaders inspire teams to collaborate in decision-making. This means choosing the best courses of action and integrating the ideas from your various team members. But the process for group decision-making can be flawed. The problem is that leaders, when trying to promote leadership skills and individuality, can instead produce a mass of followers. And followers rarely innovate or take charge of a situation. We call this groupthink. As a leader, it is important to recognize how it happens and how to move your team away from groupthink.

   NCC grad receives grant to support business start-up

Recent Nash Community College graduate Kristopher Gupton of Littleton has been selected among applicants throughout the United States to receive $4,825 in seed money supporting the establishment of his small business, H&K Farms. Gupton earned the Entrepreneur Award as a member of the National Society of Leadership and Success at Nash Community College.

The Aims Community College chapter Advisors of The National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS) have been recognized for outstanding achievement. The Aims chapter of The National Society of Leadership and Success has the highest membership and participation of all of the college’s student clubs and organizations. The advisors include Christine Gaudinski, Ty’Ray Thompson, Joél Orozco-Almeida and Ryan Barone.

Garrett Collier was recently inducted into the National Society of Leadership and Success at Southern Arkansas University. The National Society of Leadership and Success is a leadership honor society consisting of roughly 550 collegiate chapters and 730,000 members nationwide.
